Free Essential Eight self-assessment released for Australian businesses

Most small and mid-sized organisations we meet know the Essential Eight exists and have no idea where they sit against it. The assessment we used internally during onboarding is now available to anyone, free and without a sales call attached.

How it works

The tool walks through each of the eight mitigation strategies — patch applications, patch operating systems, multi-factor authentication, restrict administrative privileges, application control, restrict Microsoft Office macros, user application hardening and regular backups — and asks what is actually in place today.

It returns an indicative maturity position and, more usefully, an order of work: which control returns the most risk reduction per dollar in your specific situation.

Why the order matters more than the score

The Essential Eight defines maturity levels from zero to three. An organisation with one control at level three and three controls at level zero is far more exposed than one sitting evenly at level one.

The assessment therefore pushes towards an even baseline before recommending depth in any single control, which is also the sequence the ACSC advises.
